Research into childhood obesity has risen significantly in the last couple of years because studies have conclusively proven that being overweight is linked as a contributing factor towards many other diseases. These diseases are inclusive of diabetes, metabolic syndrome, problems with sleeping, atherosclerosis and several others.

Obesity also results in many psychological and emotional problems, the most common of which is depression and alienation socially. Plus, it has been seen that if you are overweight as a child, there is a big chance that you will be an obese adult. The chances of this happening increases twofold if even one of your parents is obese.

Recently, many celebrities have taken up the subject of combating childhood obesity as a pet project to a very good reception. Notably First Lady Michelle Obama has spoken out on this topic because it is becoming more than obvious what a serious problem childhood obesity has turned into, especially in America. She has spoken about her own experience in regards to the topic by telling how her family relied on fast food to keep them going in the days of campaigning.

However, when her daughters’ pediatrician informed her of the negative consequences of her children consuming such unhealthy food on a daily basis, she radically changed their diets to a much healthier one. Michelle Obama has gone on to talk about the physical problems that are associated with obesity and focused on how lethargy takes over the life of obese children. She has also spoken about how obesity can and may eventually lead to serious diseases like diabetes and heart diseases, the former of which is now shockingly rising in younger people.

Michelle Obama has also talked about how parents can take measures to prevent their children from gaining an enormous amount of weight, and her words have resonance especially because she herself is a mother. She has stressed upon the need for a healthy diet, high in fresh fruit and vegetables, and the necessity of taking in at least a liter of water every day. Her words have had quite an impact because now the American government has put together a task force that is devoted to dealing with the issue of childhood obesity. In fact, America is now investing up to $10 billion in the National School Lunch Program to ensure that children eat healthily.

The First Lady’s efforts have prompted scientists and researchers to now delve deeper into the issue of childhood obesity and easier ways to combat the problem. We can now only hope that some solution pops up soon.
