3 Tips For Childhood Obesity Prevention
Kids today are generally more over-weight than generations before them. There are many reasons for this. The type of quick and easy food that is purchased and eaten causes nutritional issues with the caloric intake. Most kids do not take advantage of playing outdoors anymore like the “good old days” of running around the neighborhood, playing in the creek, riding their bikes, etc. Societal causes for this are typically safety concerns by their parents, so kids spend time indoors or at carefully crafted activities provided by their parents. And many kids simply do not have to do the hard work that past generations were required to do to support the family.
The bottom line is that kids today eat too much junk and they exercise far too little. Sure there are athletic kids who participate in many activities like football, soccer, baseball, gymnastics and karate to name a few. But there are many kids who do basically nothing all day except watch TV and play video games. These are fine activities when done in moderation, of course.
The first tip to get kids moving is to have the parents get involved as well. Far too many parents are also over weight and out of shape. This does not set a good example for their children. If the kids are used to big fattening meals and sitting around the house all day with their parents then they will be doomed to be large as well. Therefore parents need to provide healthy meals and have everyone in the family get active.
The second tip to prevent childhood obesity is to limit how much sedentary activity the kids partake in. There is no reason that children should be sitting on the couch in front of the video game console as soon as they get home from school and all day Saturday and Sunday. This happens constantly. There has been a movement with some video game publishers to create games that involve the participant in moving, but the ideal option is for the child to find activities to do outside.
The third tip is for parents to interest the kids into playing some sort of sporting event that will require them to practice and set goals along with the team. Most team sports or individual sporting activities require the participant to practice, get in good shape and remain in condition. It is helpful for the parent to allow the child to figure out what sport or activity they like and what they are ultimately good in. This will keep them interested.
Obesity in children is a problem. Parents need to get a handle on this issue to keep them form having issues with weight loss in later years. Kids need to start out in their young life eating right, working out, getting fit and staying in shape.
